Flying Purple Monkeys-In The Begining

Why are Purple Monkeys flying in Greenwich?

For immediate release

To promote a unique music event, a group of Kidbrooke School students dressed in monkey costumes will take over Greenwich town centre on the 8th of May and release hundreds of purple balloons.

The “Purple Monkeys” are organising a charity music gig as part of the Blastbeat contest to find budding rock promoters and exciting new bands.

Blastbeat is an award winning Teen Music & Multimedia Business project offered to high schools around the world to teach entrepreneurial business skills, promote young musicians, and support youth communities.

The Kidbrooke School Seven, aged 14 and 15, have formed their own media company and named it Flying Purple Monkeys. They are busy making final arrangements for the gig that will be held at the St Alfege Church Hall on May the 21st. It will feature seven local bands, one of whom could go on to win a prestigious recording contract and play in front of 30,000 at the 02 arena.

Flying Purple Monkeys themselves hope to win £1000 for their school and to raise money for the WWF environmental organisation to help the monkeys in the wild.

To launch the event, to collect money and to offer tickets for the gig, they will be monkeying around with costumes and balloons outside St Alfege’s Church from midday on Saturday the 8th May.

About The Project

We are a group of Kidbrooke students. Flying Purple Monkeys is our entry to the Blastbeat competition.

Blastbeat is an award winning, fun & exciting, new Teen Music & Multimedia Business project offered to high schools around the world to teach entrepreneurial business skills, promote young musicians, and support youth communities on a local and global level.

Teenagers organize themselves into Music & Multimedia Companies (MMCs), with each member of the company taking on a different job role which include CEO, Sales & Marketing Manager, Public Relations Manager, Finance Manager, Event Manager, Company Secretary, Talent scout, Web Manager, Video Crew, Photographer, Journalist, Ecology/CSR Manager and Art & Design Manager, ultimately producing a Battle of the Bands concert in order to identify the best musical talent in their areas. There are 2 competitions in 1, an enterprise competition for the MMCs and a Battle of the Bands for the musicians.

Winning Bands are selected from the school concerts by a panel of industry professionals and progress to Semi/Grand finals. The winning band receives the prize of a Development Deal with a major record label.

Recent winners from the UK include 'Hydro' from Manor House and 'Raising Voice' from North London.

MMCs in each school carry out a variety of specific tasks throughout a 3/4 Month Module and are graded on a continuous assessment basis. 20% of the marks are allocated to their end of year presentation at the MMC Exhibition on the day of the Semi Finals.

The winning MMCs from each Semi Final, plus wildcards, progress to the Grand Final with the winner receiving £2000 seed capital and £1000 for their school.

Due to the support from the DCSF, Blastbeat is offering the programme FREE to 66 schools in London for the current school year.
